DOT physical exam components:

  • Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate
  • Thorough review of health history including medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, neurological disorders, heart disorders, etc.
  • Review of current medications
  • Physical Examination
  • Vision acuity test (snellen eye chart)
  • Hearing test
  • Abdominal exam
  • Possibly additional tests regarding any red flags in patient history
Standard Requirements for passing a DOT physical exam and obtaining a 2 year certification (1-year certifications can be given if patient does not meet all requirements to receive a 2 year Cert.):
  • Blood pressure under 140/90 (1-year cert. is possible if above), if blood pressure is controlled by medication, this is NOT disqualifying
  • 20/40 vision in each eye, glasses or contacts are acceptable during test
  • Be able to distinguish between traffic light colors
  • No use of schedule I drugs

Why are DOT Physicals Required?

To ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all passengers, commercial vehicle drivers must undergo regular medical examinations. The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all drivers to pass a DOT Physical Exam once every two years.

These physicals are designed to monitor the applicant’s health and well-being and identify any problems before they become hazardous to the driver or the people they’re transporting.

You must pass a DOT physical exam to get your commercial driver’s license. The exam will ensure that you are healthy enough to operate a commercial vehicle safely.

What Does a Dot Physical Involve?

A DOT physical is a medical examination required of all commercial drivers and motor carriers. It’s conducted by a medical examiner, who can be either a doctor or nurse practitioner.

The examination includes a series of tests and screenings to determine whether or not the patient has any conditions that may affect their ability to drive safely. These conditions include:

  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Vision problems (such as nearsightedness or farsightedness)
  • Hearing loss
  • Muscle weakness/coordination problems
  • Diabetes
  • Blood pressure issues
  • Heart disease or heart failure
  • Seizure disorders

Who Needs a Dot Physical?

If you drive a commercial vehicle or you’re applying for a commercial driver’s license (CDL), you’ll need to pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam. Commercial drivers include:
